How often should I have my chimney swept?
For occasional users i.e once a week during winter, we recommend that you have your flue swept by a chimney sweep at least once a year. Even if you only light your fire/ woodburner a handful of times each year, it’s important to have your flue serviced to avoid obstructions and blockages, such as birds’ nests, leaves etc. For heavier users, we would recommend a service every six weeks of the burning season e.g. at the start of the season, and again in January. As woodburners tend to have narrow diameter flues, compared with open brick chimneys, we recommend that woodburners are swept up to four times a year.
Why should I have my chimney swept?
Firstly, and most importantly, an unswept flue can build up tar, dust, and creosote, all of which are potentially combustible and can result in a chimney fire. According to Norfolk fire services, one of “the most common causes of chimney fires are infrequent sweeping and cleaning”. Furthermore, if you have a chimney fire, the fire service may charge you if you fail to prove that the chimney has been regularly swept (see http://www.norfolkfireservice.gov.uk/nfrs/your-safety/safety-in-your-home/19-useful-guides/12-chimney-fires) for more information.
Another important point is that a blocked chimney will not allow potentially toxic gases, such as CO (Carbon Monoxide) to escape. A build up of CO can have catastrophic results. As part of our service, we always complete a smoke test to ensure the flue is drawing air properly, and will advise you accordingly if any problems persist.
Regular sweeping also allows a free flow of air into the chimney. This will allow your fore to burn with sufficient oxygen to reach the correct temperature and hence allow a clean burn to take place. A smoky, smouldering fire is a sign that there may be insufficient draw. If in doubt give us a call.
